A great colic remedy to help reduce the stress, is massaging baby to help her wind down and relax.
When your baby is thrust in the world, think of all the sights and sounds she experiences in a day. Many doctors now think that colic could be your baby's way of releasing all the stress they have built up over the course of a day.
Many parents are turning to this method to help combat colic. Read more about infant massage.
Swaddle the Baby
Remember, recreating the cozy womb-like environment is important to help make your baby feel safe and secure. When she was in the womb, it was a tight fit. Swaddling your infant achieves the feeling of being back in the womb. Read here for instructions on how to swaddle your baby.
Alter the Diet
Whether it is breastmilk or formula, what the baby eats could cause excess gas, which in turn causes discomfort and fussiness.
Changing your baby's diet to an easily digested formula can reduce the gas associated with colic. We changed our daughter's formula to Nestle Good Start (formerly Carnation Good Start) and it definitely helped.
In cases of breastfeeding, changing the mother's diet can produce relief as well. If mom is eating alot of garlic, caffeine, broccoli, beans, dairy or other gas-causing foods, this is being passed through the breastmilk to the baby.
Sure, Gripe Water or simithecone drops can help alleviate the gas, but it would be best to go directly to the source and stop the gas before it starts.
Get Moving
Motion is a very effective method for quieting a colicky baby. "Why?" you might wonder...well let me elaborate.
Your baby was in a womb for 30-40 something weeks. All that time, she was jostled around and moving along with mom from place to place. When your baby came out of that comfort zone by being born, there was no more automatic movement. To help your baby transition from the womb to the world, we can help them by creating that effect of movement in the womb.
There are several good options, all perfectly effective.
