My sweet little colic baby

Our Colic Baby Story

What do you mean she has COLIC?

I am a colic baby survivor. I am not a doctor, and I don't profess to play one on the Internet. My expertise is life experience. The following testimony is absolutely true. I share it with you with the hope that the various colic remedies that worked for my husband and I night after night will work for you as well.

It all started for us about a week after bringing our daughter home. We were brand-new parents. Never even changed a diaper. And I was recovering from a c-section.

Everything was fine...at first.

She slept a lot the first two weeks. We thought, "Wow, this is a breeze, all she does is eat and sleep." Just when we had started to get our bearings, it happened.

One evening, around 5 or 6, she started screaming her head off. We were stupefied.

Is she wet? No.

Is she hungry? Doesn't seem like it.

Then what in the world could be causing this crying outburst. She had inconsolable crying. She wasn't just a "little fussy"; she was in severe pain.

Being a new parent, I did what every good, new parent does when they have a baby question...I called my mom.

Mom suggested I:

-Try rocking her.
-Try walking with her.
-Give her simithecone drops

Simethiwhat?

When nothing seemed to work, my mom didn't know what to tell me. She had never experienced such extreme baby crying. I don't know what to tell you...let her cry it out my mom tells me.

Huh? Cry it out. You don't understand...this isn't any ordinary crying. It's ear-piercing shrieking. Four solid hours of it. Her face was as red as tomato paste, and she shook her fists at us like she was Rocky.

But finally, around 10 or so, it subsided. She fell asleep. Maybe letting her cry it out was the answer after all. Maybe this was an isolated incident.

By the next morning, she was fine...

...until 5 or 6 that evening.

And so the cycle went. I sought out all kinds of advice. Friends, mothers-in-law (I have two), sisters-in-law etc. Everybody gave their spin on the situation.

"Oh, it's gas, give her simethicone drops."
"Oh, she's hungry, feed her more often."
"Maybe she's teething, give her a frozen waffle."

A frozen waffle? At two weeks? I don't think so.

No one told me that it was probably colic. Thinking there was something horribly wrong, I called the doctor and got her in immediately.

The doctor didn't seem too worried about the crying. She just smiled and said:

"Your daughter probably has colic."

What do you mean she probably has colic? That's the screaming baby thing that lasts for months and months, right? Other than telling me my daughter was healthy, the doctor didn't really give me any direction on how to deal with the colic. I was on my own.

So, I had to educate myself. I studied the subject of colic like a maniac. And through trial and error, came up with some theories and remedies that seemed to work to quiet my daughter's colic baby outbursts.

Because I know I'm not the only parent out there that has experienced or is experiencing a baby with colic, I started this site in 2005 to spread the word. This site will give you tips, advice, and the tools you need to stop those crying jags.
